Alpha Chi Omega

NAME:

The name Alpha Chi Omega was chosen by our seven founding members. "Alpha," symbolizing the first letter of the Greek alphabet and representing that we were the first sorority of a musical background. "Omega" was selected to symbolize the last letter of the Greek alphabet and representing that we were the last musical sorority of our kind. To form our name, greek word “Kai,” meaning “and,” was soon changed to “Chi,” then creating our sorority name: "Alpha Chi Omega."

Our founders, Anna Allen, Olive Burnett, Bertha Deniston, Amy Dubois, Nellie Gamble, Bessie Grooms, and Estelle Leonard, came together at DePauw University in Indiana on October 15, 1885 to create the first musical sorority.
